Aim toward the strategic end of the business-relevance spectrum as the CIO and IT functions develop. It begs the question of what the IT function is for, or at least will become, as more and more of our technology management moves into the cloud and more and more of our budget goes to other operations. You should steer toward the strategic end of the business-relevance spectrum given the uncertainty surrounding the future of the IT function. However, as some CIOs have learned after testing on their best management consultant demeanor in the boardroom, all roads ultimately lead back to new technology. Are we then destined to fall into a whirlpool of functional obsolescence? No, not always. We can at least do this in one way.
